Nike‘s ISPA sub-label has revealed its full 2020 footwear and apparel lineup. Originally launched in 2018, ISPA stands for “Improvise, Scavenge, Protect, Adapt,” and aims to create products capable of taking on the “unique and shifting challenges of the human-made environment” through a blend of utility and performance. Five new sneaker silhouettes — the ISPA Zoom Road Warrior, ISPA Overreact, ISPA Overreact Sandal, ISPA Flow 2020, and ISPA Drifter — are accompanied by versatile jackets and tops, all crafted with a modern urban lifestyle in mind.
First up is the Road Warrior, a sneaker designed for constant movement. Pulling inspiration from running, basketball, training and outdoor footwear, it juxtaposes the open heel of Nike Shox with double-stacked Zoom Air cushioning units and underfoot plates. This provides a nod to other modern Nike shoes like the Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% and Air Zoom BB NXT, while the strap-secured knit upper draws from training and hiking shoes.
Next is the Overreact, a knit silhouette with an asymmetrical collar and beefy React foam midsole. Originally debuted in a special Prodisim ISPA zine, it uses data culled from geometries of past React silhouettes like the React Element 87 for a midsole that’s tuned to the natural movement of the foot. This ensures maximum cushion and minimal bulk — even sock liners and strobels were removed, enabling the wearer to sit directly above pillowy React foam.
The Overreact’s DNA is also copied for an Overreact Sandal. This hybrid style mixes visible and hidden layers on its stacked upper for a breezy fit, while the React foam midsole uses an abstract tread pattern for a nod to improvised traction systems. These pieces combine to make the collection’s most summer-ready style, one that looks somewhat like a futuristic Nike ACG project.
Balancing breathability and structure, the Flow 2020 uses a stripped-down upper with cut-out detailing on the midfoot and synthetic construction. This bold build aims to solve a common problem — hot feet in the summer months — by applying innovative heatmapping logic from performance footwear, and serves up a full-foot React midsole for exemplary comfort.
For the final sneaker style, ISPA presents the Drifter, with a Maison Margiela-esque Tabi toe. Combining the ethos of a Japanese work boot with the build of a lightweight casual sneaker, the Drifter sits atop a midsole made partially of reground ZoomX foam. High-cut uppers with external webbing ensure a lockdown fit, and unique fastening systems enable sneakerheads to cinch their kicks from both the front and center of the eyestays.
Finally, a unique apparel collection was crafted with the urban commuter in mind. Centered around Dri-FIT and the previously-released Inflate jacket, the collection also supplies tight-fitting bodysuits, long-sleeve tops and shorts to keep wearers cool and comfortable.
The Nike ISPA collection will see a staggered rollout on the Nike webstore over the course of the summer months, beginning with the Overreact’s release on July 9. The Zoom Road Warrior follows on July 10, the Overreact Sandal on July 31 and the Flow 2020 on August 13. The Drifter will conclude the release slate on September 1.
